Brightons Caicedo nearly joined Man Utd but clusterf*** talks scuppered move
Brighton hero Moises Caicedo may have been playing for Manchester United rather than scoring against them if a deadline day deal had not broken down last year.
Caicedo started just the sixth Premier League game of his career on Saturday as United travelled down to the south coast. The Ecuador international starred as the Seagulls humiliated Ralf Rangnick's men to claim a 4-0 win.
The midfielder opened the scoring after just 15 minutes after he picked up a blocked shot well outside the box. He then set himself before firing a shot that arrowed past David de Gea and into the bottom corner.
Brighton would go on to net three more goals, all of which came in the second-half, to confirm their highest points total in their Premier League history. But if things had turned out differently in February 2021, Caicedo may have been lining up for United at the AMEX.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Old Trafford chiefs 'discussed' making a move for Caicedo while he was playing for Independiente del Valle. But it is stated that the negotiations were a 'clusterf***' which caused the move to break down.
With talks having failed, United 'moved aside' in search of alternate targets. That opened the door to Brighton, who signed Caicedo on deadline day in the 2021 January transfer window, before sending him out on loan to Beerschot last August.

He was recalled by Brighton amid a midfielder shortage in January and put in his best performance for the club on Saturday. Brighton boss Graham Potter was delighted with Caicedo's display and hailed his club's recruitment department.
“It was one the great days. We’ve had a bit of pain in front of our own supporters this season so we owed them one – it was a fantastic performance and an amazing result," said Potter.
“Moises has got the ability to do that, it was a great finish and he’s been amazing since he came into the team while Marc has played at a very high level all season. Good recruitment is a collective thing.
"It’s important we bring in the right characters with the correct attitude and it’s a huge credit to everyone at the club. It starts from the top with the chairman. I’m so pleased for the players."
