Brighton deny agreement has been reached with Chelsea for Marc Cucurella

Brighton & Hove Albion have denied that an agreement has been reached with Chelsea for the sale of Marc Cucurella.

The Blues have been strongly linked with a move for the Spanish defender in recent days after Manchester City walked away from a potential deal after failing to agree a fee with Brighton. It had been reported on Wednesday that Chelsea had agreed a deal to sign Cucurella for more than £50million, with youngster Levi Colwill set to head in the opposite direction.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano had even tweeted his trademark "here we go" in anticipation of the signing being announced.

However, Brighton shut down reports later on Wednesday night as they released a club statement on Twitter which read: "Contrary to inaccurate reports from numerous media outlets this evening, no agreement has been reached with any club to sell Marc Cucurella.”

It had been reported earlier in the day that discussions between Brighton and Chelsea had hit a snag due to the two clubs disagreeing over a fee and the inclusion of Colwill in the deal.

Colwill had been expected to head the other way as part of the deal, having impressed on loan at Huddersfield Town last season. Romano has since responded to a fan who said he had "lied to us" on Twitter, by replying: "We will see who lied."

Cucurella had appeared on the verge of heading to the Etihad Stadium earlier in the window after agreeing personal terms with the Premier League champions. However, City were unwilling to meet Brighton's asking price for the 24-year-old Spaniard.

The Seagulls only signed Cucurella from Getafe last summer in a deal worth £16.2million, with the player going on to win both the players' player and player of the season awards in his maiden campaign at Brighton.

He made 38 appearances for Graham Potter's side last term, scoring once and providing two assists from left-back. The Barcelona academy graduate has also won five caps for Spain.
