Brendan Rodgers praises Leicester's owners and vows to 'fight on'

‘Whatever happens I’ll have a huge amount of respect for them’: Under-fire Brendan Rodgers concedes he ‘understands the game’ as he praises Leicester’s owners amid sack talk… but he vows to ‘fight on’ to turn worst run in EIGHT YEARS around

  • Brendan Rodgers lost his sixth game in a row as Leicester fell to a 6-2 defeat
  • Tottenham made it 22 goals conceded for Rodgers’ side – a Premier League high
  • With six losses in a row in the league pressure is mounting on the ex-Celtic boss

Brendan Rodgers has emphasised his respect for Leicester City’s owners after a humbling 6-2 defeat against Tottenham on Saturday night.

The former Celtic boss reiterated his gratefulness to the club’s ownership despite the Foxes’ worst run in eight years, as pressure continues to build on Rodgers after a shocking start to the season.

Leicester conceded six against Spurs, making it 11 from two games as their winless run start to the 2022-23 Premier League season continues, managing only one draw and six losses.

Brendan Rodgers reiterated his support for the club’s ownership despite his side’s display

Rodgers told SkySports: ‘Whatever happens I’ll have a huge amount of respect for them [the owners] because they’ve given me great support.

‘I understand the game. The scoreline didn’t reflect the game but the bottom line is it’s a heavy defeat. They’ve given me brilliant support.

Rodgers’ side are yet to win in the league with one point from seven games

‘Whatever happens to me at Leicester whether I stay and fight on, I’ll always respect them.’

‘For 73 minutes it was a good game and we were arguably the better side with the chances we created We got punished for mistakes.’

Leicester had taken the lead through Yuri Tielemans, who was allowed to retake his missed penalty after VAR confirmed Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris had come off his line to save the first attempt.

And the visitors went in level at half-time after James Maddison cancelled out Eric Dier’s second for the hosts, but the visitors were blown away in the second half, due in part to a Son Heung-min hat-trick from the bench.

But despite a run of horror results – with his side’s only win coming in a penalty shoot-out victory over League Two new boys Stockport in the Carabao Cup – the Northern Irishman insists he will persevere in the dugout.

Leicester conceded more than five in consecutive league games for the first time since 1980

He told BBC Sport: ‘I always do believe we can overcome it. You didn’t see a team today that is short of confidence, that is always a good sign.

‘Once we went 4-2 behind it was difficult for the players.

‘I will always fight on, but I understand the game and six straight losses isn’t good for anyone.

‘But I thought we really dominated the game, especially in the first-half, but once the first goal went in there was maybe a wee sense of deja-vu for the players but they kept fighting and showing their spirit.’

The heavy scoreline meant Leicester have conceded at least five goals in successive top-flight matches for the first time since September 1980, having lost 5-2 to Brighton in Graham Potter’s final game before his Chelsea departure.

The former Celtic and Liverpool boss cut a dejected figure on the touchline on Saturday night

Fans have spared no time in calling for his resignation, as the Foxes faithful look to make Rodgers the league’s third casualty in just seven games at the start of the season.

And the 49-year-old admitted to SkySports that he was not oblivious to the comments coming from elements of his support, adding: ‘Very much so. I come in every day and do my work. I totally understand the frustration of supporters.

‘I can’t hide from that. It’s my responsibility.’

A Son Heung-min hat-trick ended the Foxes’ chances of a comeback at 3-2 in the second half
