Best consolation goal EVER? Bochum striker Goncalo Paciencia fires stunning 90th-minute volley into the top corner, but hardly celebrates… as his side slip to 3-1 Bundesliga defeat at Hoffenheim

Bochum striker Goncalo Paciencia scored one of the best consolation goals ever in his side’s 3-1 defeat at Hoffenheim on Friday night.

With Hoffenheim trailing 3-0 heading into the 90th minute, they mounted one final attack and a looping cross came in from the right-hand side.

Paciencia watched the cross all the way, but his chances of scoring appeared close to zero as the ball came across at an awkward height and he had a defender blocking his route to goal.

However, he adjusted his body well and fired a right-footed volley past the defender and into the top corner, with the goalkeeper rooted to the spot after being left with no chance.

It was a sensational goal that would usually warrant wild celebrations, but as his team were still two goals behind, the Portuguese forward immediately turned to run back to the halfway line, raising a clenched fist as the only acknowledgement of his strike.

His effort proved to be in vain as the final whistle went a few minutes later with no further goals scored.

Bochum left themselves too much to do, having gone in 2-0 down at the break following an Erhan Masovic own goal and Andrej Kramaric strike, before Ihlas Bebou made it 3-0 to the hosts in the 76th minute.

But the game may be remembered for Paciencia’s goal, his second of the Bundesliga season, after he came off the bench at the interval.

Hoffenheim stayed sixth after their win, while Bochum are currently 12th having taken 13 points from their opening 14 matches.
