Best Prem sales of all-time as Everton rinse Chelsea for £60m Anthony Gordon

Football fans have been left baffled at reports Chelsea are ready to spend £60million to sign Everton attacker Anthony Gordon.

With the 21-year-old having just one full Premier League season under his belt, and seven goal contributions to show for it, the Toffees are quickly being lauded for pulling off the best bit of business an English club has ever made should the deal go ahead.

With that in mind, Daily Star Sport is taking a look at the best Prem sales of all-time. From desperate last-ditch recruitments to massively over-priced moves, the following transfers have all been to the benefit of the club cashing in.

Harry Maguire

We'll get the clear and obvious one out of the way first, shall we? At this point no one can argue that a fee of around 80million Great British pounds for Harry Maguire wasn't silly money.

Leicester should really be up in court for how badly they robbed Manchester United. Three years on from the move, Maguire remains the world's most expensive defender.

But unfortunately for United, he's a million miles away from being the best. The centre-back now looks to have been dropped by Erik ten Hag, who favoured Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez together in their 2-1 win over Liverpool.

Who would you add to our list? Let us know in the comments section.

Jonathan Woodgate

Real Madrid really should have done their due diligence back in the 2004 summer transfer window, because Jonathan Woodgate ended up spending more time in the physio's room than on the pitch in Spain.

Newcastle knew all too well about the defender's injury issues – he was even crooked at the time of the transfer – so must have laughed all the way to the bank with their £13.4m fee.

Woodgate's debut didn't come until 13 months later and he went on to make a small amount of appearances, although he was a hit with the Real faithful.

Fernando Torres

Selling your best player to a direct rival midway through the season seemed like a major blunder from Liverpool when Fernando Torres departed for Chelsea in January 2011.

It turned out to be a masterstroke, though, as while Torres severely struggled to figure out where he'd packed his shooting boots, his replacement Luis Suarez went on to surpass his legacy at Anfield.

The Reds had pocketed a record British transfer fee of £50m to boot, with their Merseyside neighbours possibly about to repeat history and rinse Chelsea once more with Gordon.

Philippe Coutinho

Seven years on from Torres and Liverpool did it again! They were never going to turn down an offer for Philippe Coutinho which had the potential to rise to an eye-watering £142m.

Barcelona have hardly covered themselves in glory with their transfer business in recent years, hence why they're in dire financial straights and pulling economic levers left, right and centre.

Coutinho was by far the worst of the lot, with his time at the Camp Nou a massive failure. Liverpool, meanwhile, barely noticed he'd gone with Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah firing in the goals.

Dominic Solanke

You certainly can't knock the transfer negotiators at Anfield – they've milked every cow dry. While it doesn't come close to Coutinho's fee, the money they bagged for Dominic Solanke was very shrewd business.

Having signed the former Chelsea youngster on a free transfer in 2017, they somehow managed to squeeze £19m out of Bournemouth just 18 months later.

Solanke scored three goals in 42 Premier League games on route to relegation, and while he fired the goals to get the Cherries promotion last season, they paid a hefty price for a Championship striker.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Crystal Palace could only have dreamt about getting £50m for a homegrown talent until the call from Old Trafford about Aaron Wan-Bissaka came.

The right-back was just 12 months into his senior career, albeit a very impressive debut year, and the three seasons since have shown it was too much, too soon for him.

Like Maguire, Wan-Bissaka now finds himself out in the cold behind Diogo Dalot, with Palace joining Leicester in the 'we've mugged off United' club.

Alex Iwobi

Arsenal could never really find a space in their side for Alex Iwobi so rather than keep holding onto him, they passed him off to Everton for an eyebrow-raising £28m, rising to £34m with add-ons.

Three years on and the Nigeria international is yet to register double digits in either goals or assists having played out on the right, the left, through the middle, at wing-back…

Since Frank Lampard arrived Iwobi has been moved yet again into a central midfield role. Although he's shown better form of late, the Gunners definitely not regretting their decision to sell.

Eden Hazard

It cannot be underestimated how much of a blinder Chelsea played with Eden Hazard. Real were after him for years, but they kept pushing them back and pushing them back.

Then after seven hugely fruitful seasons of Hazard tearing up the Prem, the Blues sold him at the perfect time for a fee which topped nine figures.

Since the 2019 deal, Hazard has scored six, yes six, goals for the Spanish giants, putting it up there as one of the best sales English football has ever seen.
