Berisha: I need goals

Besart Berisha “cannot live” without scoring goals.

The A-League’s all-time leading scorer is yet to open his account this season, with his run of five games without a goal also including Western United’s final two games of last season.

While the 35-year-old marksman is trying to remain patient in the knowledge that once his drought is broken, goals are likely to flow regularly, Berisha is itching for his 136th A-League goal.

“I love goals, I really do,” Berisha said ahead of United’s derby with his former club Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park on Saturday night.

“It’s in my DNA. I feel like I cannot live without goals. I need goals.

“I’m a typical striker who lives for goals, and in both ways, it helps the team but it helps me too because I’m a striker who loves goals.”

Almost incredibly, Berisha was not on the scoring sheet when United netted five times in their win over Perth Glory in last Saturday’s nine-goal thriller at GMHBA Stadium.

Before the match, United coach Mark Rudan had asked his team to provide better service to Berisha.

And the Albania and Kosovo international forward was confident Rudan’s request would eventually be met.

"In the beginning it was all about having a better life, support my family. I love this game so much. So I feel like I just cannot stop"@BesartBerisha7 on why he's still going at the same intensity.

“We all know that the players are trying,” he said.

“This is why I don’t complain because I can see that they are trying and trying and trying – it just’s hasn’t been coming.

“I make beautiful runs and I’m really there where I have to be. If they can use me a little bit more, we can have a better impact, but I’m staying positive because I know I’m doing the right things.

“I’m there where I should be, and that’s the most important thing. Eventually the balls will come – hopefully against the Victory this weekend.”

Berisha said it was always a “crazy” feeling playing against his former A-League clubs – the Victory and Brisbane Roar.

In seven seasons at the two clubs, Berisha won four championships, two premierships, a FFA Cup and two competition Golden Boots.

“It doesn’t matter if I play against Brisbane or the Victory, it’s always special,” he said.

“I shared so many great memories with these clubs.

“Just talking about the club I’m playing this week, the Victory, I shared so much emotion, so much pleasure, so much love with their supporters.

“I have so much respect for them, and for sure it’s going to be super emotional for me again, this but this week, like it was last season, it’s all about Western United. I really want to win for my club.”
