Man Utd condemn racist abuse towards Tuanzebe and Martial after Sheff Utd defeat

Manchester United have condemned the racist abuse suffered by their players following their 2-1 defeat at home to Sheffield United.

United duo Axel Tuanzebe and Anthony Martial were subjected to vile racist abuse on social media in the wake of the defeat to the Premier League's bottom club.

After the appalling abuse directed towards their players, United called on social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram to do more to identify the perpetrators, so they can be held to account.

The statement from United read: "Everyone at Manchester United is disgusted by the racial abuse received by players via social media after last night’s game.

"We utterly condemn it and it is encouraging to see other fans condemn this on social media also.

"Manchester United has zero tolerance of any form of racism or discrimination and a long-standing commitment to campaigning against it through our All Red All Equal initiative.

"Identifying these anonymous mindless idiots remains problematic. We urge social media platforms and regulatory authorities to strengthen measures to prevent this kind of behaviour."

United captain Harry Maguire also took to Twitter to denounce those responsible, posting a picture of himself taking a knee alongside teammate Bruno Fernandes with the words: "UNITED against racism. We will not tolerate it."

Tuanzebe was making a rare start in the heart of the United defence alongside Maguire, while Martial started the match in attack.

The defeat to the Blades meant that United missed the chance to go back above neighbours Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
