David Beckham has lifted the lid on the moment he found out Lionel Messi had decided to join Inter Miami, revealing: ‘I woke up to about a million messages on my phone… I was thinking, “What’s gone off?”‘
But the club’s co-owner insists he was not surprised that the Argentina legend would move to Major League Soccer over Saudi Arabia.
Messi, 36, last month announced his move to the United States after leaving French champions Paris Saint-Germain and turning down an eye-watering offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.
Barcelona also hoped to re-sign the World Cup winner, only for financial rules to make the move impossible.
Messi’s decision to join Inter Miami represents a huge coup for the club — and MLS — but Beckham insists he was always confident the club could land soccer’s biggest stars.

‘A couple of weeks ago, I woke up to about a million messages on my phone,’ said Beckham. ‘I was thinking, “What’s gone off? I don’t usually get this many messages”. All of a sudden, I hear Leo has come out and announced he’s coming to Miami.
‘Obviously, it wasn’t a surprise to me. I have always said, from the word go, that if I had the opportunity to bring the best players in the game to Miami, at whatever time of their careers, I would do that. I have always made that commitment to our fans.
‘So when I hear that one of the best players — if not the best player — who has won everything in the game, who is still a great player, still young and still doing what he’s doing, wants to play for my team, it’s a massive moment for us.’

Inter Miami is reportedly in talks with Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos about joining Messi
Beckham’s co-owner Jorge Mas recently detailed their three-year pursuit of Messi, who is expected to make his debut later this month.
Speaking to Spanish publication El Pais, Mas revealed: ‘In 2019, we started thinking about how we could bring him in… Messi can turn MLS into one of the two or three biggest leagues in the world.’
Messi’s former team-mate at Barcelona, Sergio Busquets, has followed him to South Beach, while Inter are reportedly in talks with Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos in what would be another sensational move for Major League Soccer.
Ramos, who was recently on vacation in the United States, has followed Messi out of the exit door at Paris Saint-Germain. And according to a report by Sport in his native Spain, Ramos and Miami are ‘one step away’ from an agreement.
