BBC broke own its own rules with MOTD episode with fans ‘actually disgusted’
The BBC broke its own viewing rules with its controversial Saturday night episode of Match of the Day.
Following the revelation that usual anchor Gary Lineker wouldn’t be involved in Saturday’s show after his tweet likening language used by the Conservative Government to that seen in Germany in the 1930s, the programme took on an incomparable look.
Amid Lineker’s absence, regular punditry duo Alan Shearer and Ian Wright both announced they wouldn’t be appearing alongside a host of other sports reporters and pundits, with more boycotting their respective shows on the BBC.

This saw football’s coverage across the BBC severely affected on Saturday afternoon and evening, with Football Focus and Final Score being axed from the channel as well.
The football highlights show aired for only 20 minutes on Saturday without accompanying commentary or analysis from pundits following the boycott in “solidarity” with former England player Lineker.

Unsurprisingly, the decision to remove commentary sparked outrage, with The Royal National Institute of Blind People branding the BBC’s decision not to include commentary on Match of the Day as “unacceptable” and said the corporation “needs to do better”.
In a tweet, the charity added: “The BBC should be upholding basic accessibility standards so that everyone can enjoy their output.”
The iconic football show took on a completely different look to what everyone has become accustomed to since the programme began in 1964, with the decision behind the silence clearly not one well thought out and understandably seeing backlash come the BBC’s way.
With MOTD and Match of the Day 2 set to be aired again next week, the programme has been listed to have Mark Chapman as the anchor, with no mention of the suspended 63-year-old.
Despite this, the week ahead could be long for BBC bosses who will be working to iron out the problems ahead of next week’s show, regardless of whether Lineker and co. return.
