Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann has moved to cool talk of a big for Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland. The Bundesliga giants have been linked with a bid for their rivals’ star man next summer, but Nagelsmann says that Bayern already have a better striker.

Nagelsmann says that Bayern Munich hot-shot Robert Lewandowski is currently a better forward than Haaland.

The Poland international has been in remarkable goalscoring form in recent seasons, scoring 48 goals in 40 matches across all competitions last season, and 55 goals in 47 games the season before.

And while Haaland has a remarkable 62 goals in 62 games since joining Dortmund from Red Bull Salzburg, he has yet to show the consistency of Bayern’s centre-forward.

“I think Lewandowski has shown for several years the level at which he is capable of playing,” Nagelsmann said. “He is a world-class player. That is a big difference.

“Erling Haaland has not been in the Bundesliga for many years, but his numbers are very good. Still, it is remarkable that Lewandowski has been so successful and has scored so many goals over several years at different clubs.

Nagelsmann didn’t go as far as ruling out a future move for Haaland, crediting the Dortmund forward for his immense talent.

But the 34-year-old coach did add that he is “happy” to have Lewandowski out of the two.

“Robert is a little better than Erling because he has more experience,” Nagelsmann said.

“They have in common the fact that they are very dangerous in front of the goal with any part of the body. Lewandowski is very strong in the passing game and can shoot with both feet, and I think Erling can as well.

“There are many similarities, but they are still different players. I am very happy to have Lewandowski.”

Nagelsmann’s comments will add to Manchester United’s confidence that they will be the club to sign Erling Haaland next summer.

The Norwegian is widely expected to move in the summer of 2022, and transfer expert Dean Jones says that Man Utd are keen on signing the forward.

“Manchester United want to be in that conversation, there’s no doubt about it,” Jones told The Football Terrace podcast.

“We won’t get an idea until the turn of the year as to where his mind is heading.

Haaland has started the season with a bang, scoring a hat-trick in Dortmund’s season opener in the German Cup, before bagging a brace in the first Bundesliga match of the season against Eintracht Frankfurt.

And Jones says that the 21-year-old will focus on making the most of his year at Dortmund before looking for a move.

“Right now, he’s focused on having a ridiculous final season with Borussia Dortmund,” Jones said.

“But Erling Haaland knows that he has so many options open to him next summer.

“Man United, by the way, are becoming quite excited by all this – the fact that Haaland might still be on the market next summer.”
