Bath City striker Alex Fletcher has announced that he’s now returned home following emergency brain surgery. Fletcher suffered a serious head injury during Bath City’s match with Dulwich Hamlet last month and was taken to intensive care.
The 23-year-old collided head-first with an advertising board, which was reinforced with concrete blocks. The match was eventually abandoned with Fletcher being taken to hospital where he underwent emergency neurosurgery.
He provided an update via Bath City’s Twitter account a few weeks later announcing that he was out of intensive care to continue his rehabilitation. And Fletcher has now announced that he’s been allowed to return home while stating that he hopes to return to the pitch at some point.
His statement read: “I am over the moon to tell you that I have now been discharged from hospital and I am back at home with my fiance Ellie to continue my rehabilitation following my brain surgery just over three weeks ago.
“Whilst I know that it may take some time to get back out on to the pitch, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all once again for your incredible care, love and support. It would not have been possible for me to get to this stage without you all.”
England manager Gareth Southgate has been one of many to reach out to Fletcher during his recovery. Bath City manager Jerry Gill admitted recently that he found it “remarkable” that Fletcher was recovering as quick as he was when he went to visit him in hospital.
“We’re two weeks tonight from when that horrific incident happened,” Gill told the BBC. “I never thought I’d get an opportunity to talk to him this quick, in that way. It’s remarkable, really.”
He added: “I’m just delighted that he’s coherent, he can talk to me, he can communicate. There’s a long road for him still, he’s by no means perfect because he’s gone through a major operation and a real horrific incident that was seen here.
“We’re just happy that he’s with us and we’re hoping that he continues to progress as quickly as he possibly can. But there’s no rush for it, we just want Alex around us.”
