Baresi: AC Milan will do everything possible to sign Fikayo Tomori

AC Milan chief Franco Baresi insists the club ‘will do everything possible’ to sign Fikayo Tomori permanently from Chelsea in £26m deal and claims he can become a ‘great champion’

Franco Baresi has made it clear that AC Milan will ‘do everything possible’ to land young centre back Fikayo Tomori on a permanent deal from Chelsea.

After finding minutes hard to come by at Chelsea, Tomori joined Serie A giants AC Milan on loan in January and hasn’t looked back, quickly establishing himself in the heart of defence.

Tomori – who has featured 12 times for Milan – hasn’t given anything away regarding his future but club legend and honorary vice-president Baresi says the San Siro outfit are determined to seal a permanent deal for his services.

‘We will do everything possible to sign him on a permanent deal,’ Baresi told Gazzetta dello Sport.

‘Two months are remaining until the end of the season, and it’s not only up to Milan.

‘Tomori is imposing himself with talent and determination. He has shown no fear playing in a new league. He can potentially become a great champion. I hope he lives up to expectations.’

A £26m option to buy was agreed with the loan deal, and AC will have to fork out that money out this summer with Chelsea not backing down on that sum, according to Goal.

Baresi’s comments come after sporting director and club legend Paolo Maldini confirmed Milan will attempt to make his loan deal permanent in the summer.

Tomori struggled for game time at Chelsea and pushed through a temporary move to San Siro

Speaking before Milan’s clash with Roma at the end of February, Maldini told Sky Sports Italia: ‘Tomori is a good talent and we have a buy-option clause.

‘The price is very high. AC Milan will decide at the end of this season and we will discuss it with Chelsea’s board.’

Meanwhile, the future of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has also been a big talking point at San Siro with his deal expiring in June.

The club’s vice-captain is reported to be a target for Chelsea but Baresi has admitted he hopes Donnarumma enjoys a long and successful future in Milan.

‘Taking over the AC Milan captain’s armband aged 22 is a privilege, you must understand this,’ he added.

‘We know Gigio’s value and qualities, he grew up here and we know how important it could be for Milan over the next few years.’
