Barcelona 'want to sign Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes'

Barcelona ‘want to use Jorge Mendes contacts to sign Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes’, but expect the Liverpool and Newcastle target to be ‘out of reach’ due to their financial crisis

  • The La Liga leaders will be hamstrung by their financial constraints this summer
  • Liverpool are among the clubs to be targeting the Portuguese international

Barcelona reportedly want to use their relationship with Jorge Mendes to sign Matheus Nunes, but expect a deal to be out of reach due to their financial constraints.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Relevo, Nunes is among several players targeted by Barcelona to strengthen Xavi’s midfield next season.

Nunes is a client of Mendes’ Gestifute agency, with the agent boasting a strong relationship with both Barcelona and Wolves.

The La Liga leaders reportedly believe Mendes potential involvement could aid any pursuit of Nunes, who has been targeted by both Liverpool and Newcastle.

Barcelona, however, expect a deal could be beyond their means due to the club’s ongoing financial crisis.

Nunes has attracted the interest of several clubs despite only joining Wolves last summer

The Catalan giants’ financial issues are well-documented, with the club having triggered several economic levers to afford big money transfers last summer.

La Liga president Javier Tebas revealed last month that Barcelona would need to raise £178million if they are to have any chance of entering the transfer market.

Even if they are able to raise the huge sum of money in the next transfer window, they will only be able to spend two fifths of that amount, meaning their budget would only be a maximum of around £71m.

Barcelona would likely have to turn towards free transfers in the summer in a bid to strengthen their squad.

The financial constraints have reportedly led to the Catalans shelving their interest in Man City’s Bernardo Silva, although his club captain Ilkay Gundogan remains a target due to his contract expiring in the summer.

Nunes, who has won 11 caps for Portugal, is expected to be of interest to several clubs with Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle said to be keen on a move for the Portugal midfielder.

The 24-year-old is reportedly high on Liverpool’s list of midfield targets, with the Reds having pulled out of the race to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham.

Nunes scored his first Wolves goal earlier this month in their 1-0 win over Chelsea

Nunes has made 32 appearances for Wolves in all competitions this season, since completing a club-record £38million move from Sporting Lisbon in August.

The midfielder scored his first goal for the club in Wolves 1-0 win over Chelsea earlier this month.
