Barcelona have had a summer to forget following the finanacial restrictions imposed on the Catalan club but they will be quids in if one club pays the release clause for prodigy Pedri – set at an amazing £848million (€1billion).
Pedri burst onto the scene last season after signing from Las Palmas in the summer of 2020.
The youngster played 52 games in his debut season at Barcelona, which he started at the age of just 17.
The Tenerife-born playmaker really came into his own in the Catalan capital, looking to be the heir to the throne of legends Xavi and Andres Iniesta.
And he has impressed so much that Barcelona have decided to offer him the world’s biggest release clause of all time.
Fabrizio Romano reported the news on Wednesday morning with a contract for Pedri in the pipeline.
“The release clause included in Pedri’s new contract will be historical for Barcelona,” he said.
“1b euros, one billion – 1,000 million euros.
“It’s going to be the highest clause in Barca’s history.
“Announcement expected this week from FCB – Pedri and his agent accepted the proposal.”
Pedri has entered a period where Barcelona need him the most.
And the youngster’s new deal – which will stretch to 2026 – is a great piece of news for a club in turmoil.
Having taken a £70m hit on Antoine Griezmann this summer, and even more importantly losing Lionel Messi to Paris-Saint Germain on a free, there are troubled times at the Nou Camp.
Sitting in ninth place, Ronald Koeman was coming under increasing pressure with multiple reports indicating that his time at the club was coming to an end.
But Barcelona president Joan Laporta has come out in support of the head coach, suggesting Koeman will be given more time.
His side take on Valencia on Sunday evening.
