Barcelona cruelly nicknamed the ‘new Arsenal’ with La Liga giants beaten again
Barcelona have been mocked on social media and labelled the 'new Arsenal' as they fell to another defeat in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The debt-ridden La Liga giants were beaten 3-0 for a second consecutive European matchday as they were embarrassed in Portugal by Benfica.
Darwin Nunez's brace and Rafa Silva's goal leave Ronald Koeman's side bottom of the group and without a point after they also lost their opener 3-0 at home to Bayern Munich.
This has left many on social media comparing Barcelona's current crisis to the recent downturn in fortunes at Premier League side Arsenal.
The Gunners have failed to qualify for the Champions League for the last five seasons and are not even in Europe at all this season after an eighth place finish last season.
They have also not gone beyond the last 16 in the Champions League since 2010, but did knock Benfica out of the Europa League last season, winning 4-3 on aggregate and fairing better than Barca.
The Blaugrana's shocking start in Europe has drawn comparisons to Arsenal and also seen fans claim that Mikel Arteta's side would beat them if they played each other.
One fan wrote on Twitter: “Barca fans really thought we were kidding when we said Arsenal were better than them right now LOL.”
Who would win in a match between Barcelona and Arsenal's current squads? Let us know in the comments section below.
Another simply added: “Barcelona turning into prime Arsenal.”
A third supporter seemed convinced Arsenal could beat the current Barcelona side as they tweeted: “I change my mind, Arsenal definitely beat this Barcelona side comfortably.”
The recent history of Arsenal has often been referred to as a 'banter era' for the club and one fan claimed that Barca are also now in a similar phase.
“The banter era is truly unfolding for Barcelona. They can easily free fall into an Arsenal-esque manner if this isn’t rectified sooner rather than later," claimed the fan.
“Messi is so good that he left Barcelona and they became Arsenal," wrote another fan, Lionel Messi was forced to leave Barcelona this summer due to their financial issues.
They were not the only fan to directly link the two clubs as another simply tweeted: “La Liga’s Arsenal at it again.”
Barca will look to salvage some hope for their European campaign as they face Dynamo Kiev back to back after the international break.
However, they will be without former Manchester City defender Eric Garcia, who was sent off late on in Lisbon on Wednesday night.
