Arteta told he must sign another striker by Gallas after "failure" last season

Mikel Arteta has been warned of a "new problem" at Arsenal after his failures last season.

Former Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham centre-back William Gallas has issued a stark warning to the Gunners' manager ahead of the new season and has labelled last season's finish a failure, as the Frenchman named who he thinks will finish top of the North London clubs next season. Speaking to Genting Casino the former French international revealed how he feels about the new season.

Speaking to the betting company, the 44-year-old said that it's "50/50" between his two former clubs Arsenal and Tottenham as to which will be finishing higher. Despite him being unable to split the two sides ahead of the 2022/23 season, he thinks Mikel Arteta is the problem compared to Conte at Spurs due to the Spaniard's lack of experience in the dugout.

He said: "It's always difficult at the beginning of the season to tell which London clubs are going to qualify for the Champions League or who's going to have the best opportunity to win the Premier League because when we look at Tottenham and Arsenal, who have signed some good players this summer, I'd say it's 50/50.

"It will be very interesting to see which team will come out on top. Last season it was Tottenham because Antonio Conte did a great job, he's got that passion and he brought it to his players so that's why for the new season it will give Tottenham the chance to improve again.

"With Arsenal, it's another problem with Mikel Arteta. He's a young manager but for me, he failed last season because they didn't qualify for the Champions League. Now they have a new striker so we will see what will happen."

Arsenal have already made a strong start in the transfer window, with the additions of midfielder Fabio Vieira and forward Gabriel Jesus from Premier League champions Manchester City. Even though the Gunners look like they've already made a number of savvy signings this summer, Gallas doesn't sound convinced about the signing of Brazilian striker.

The North London since has already seen club captain Alexandre Lacazette for free before joining Olympique Lyon and a new contract handed to Eddie Nketiah after his fine form at the end of last season.
