Arteta named Manager of the Month after turning nightmare start around

Mikel Arteta is named Manager of the Month for September as he credits the ‘trust and passion’ of his Arsenal stars for turning nightmare start around and delivering an ‘electric’ north London derby display

  • Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is September’s Premier League Manager of the Month
  • The Gunners were 20th in August, losing to Brentford on the opening day
  • Arteta was under mounting pressure but he’s managed to turn things around
  • Wins at rivals Tottenham, plus Burnley and Norwich, earn Arteta the gong

With Arsenal’s spiralling collapse stabilised, Mikel Arteta has completed a rapid comeback from sack-race leader to Premier League Manager of the Month.

Nine points from three games earned Arteta the September award, after his 3-1 deconstruction of north London rivals Spurs in the derby injected some life back into the English fallen giants.

It’s quite the turnaround, compared to the deathly atmosphere around the Emirates in August.

The Gunners are back in business through wins over Spurs, Burnley and Norwich in September

‘It’s a great feeling, it means we went on a good run and won matches,’ Arteta told the Premier League.

‘But for me it’s much more than that. It’s about the people involved, the people who work with me and how grateful I am to have them.

‘The level of trust, implication and passion that they show working alongside me every day, that gives me the strength and then the belief in the players that they can do it, and that they are good enough to win matches and that we believe in them.’

Stunned 2-0 on the opening day by Brentford, punished by the same score-line against Chelsea and pummelled 5-0 by Manchester City – the Gunners were pointless, goalless and rock-bottom come September 1st.

Arteta has worked hard to rescue the Gunners are their awful start left them down in 20th

The Gooners, many of whom had stuck by Arteta and his ‘process’, were finally calling for their manager and former captain’s head. N5 was a gloomy place to be.

Finally, a 1-0 win over Norwich lifted the mood. Positivity was plucked from another lacklustre display by the skipper, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Martin Odegaard then announced his re-arrival from Real Madrid, signing permanently after last season’s loan, with a stunning free-kick goal dragging Arsenal past bogey club Burnley.

A 1-0 victory over Sean Dyche’s no-nonsense northerners at Turf Moor is nothing to be sniffed at, and led the Gunners nicely into the North London Derby.

The north Londoners began the season with shocking defeats to Brentford and Man City

Victory in the north London derby got supporters back behind their team after their awful form

Hale End’s finest ran riot against Spurs, as Emile Smith-Rowe and Bukayo Saka struck either side of Aubameyang to accelerate Nuno Espirito Santo’s side’s plummet down the table.

‘I said it after the game, it’s the best atmosphere I’ve seen at the Emirates,’ the Spaniard added.

‘It was electric, it was real, it was honest and it was a real sense of chemistry between our supporters and the team.

‘And it was the perfect day to thank them. A few weeks earlier when we were under adversity and criticism they really stood for the team and it was a way for the team to say, “Thank you, you are a big part of our time and we need you, and when you are alongside us look at what we can do.”‘
