Arsenal’s potential line-up in 2024 after Arteta says judge me in “three years”

Mikel Arteta is already coming under pressure this season – even though Arsenal have only played one game.

The Gunners head into Sunday's showdown with London rivals Chelsea after being embarrassed 2-0 by new boys Brentford last week in their Premier League opener.

That result has led to the Spaniard being blasted by fans and pundits alike.

Even the Rwanda president, who are a club sponsor, has stuck the boot in on the Gunners.

But the defiant Arsenal chief has hit back at the people slating him and his side – insisting that he should be judged in "three years time".

“I totally agree that Arsenal should not accept mediocrity," Arteta conceded after his side flopped at Brentford.

“I know that people have the intention to bury us and try to criticise us but it is nothing new and I am not interested in that.

“I am not pointing at anyone, just expressing obvious feelings about some very disrespectful things that have been said.

“We need to put things into perspective because it’s one day of Premier League football under incredible circumstances and we have the whole season ahead of us."

Arteta then claimed that now is not the time to judge him, but what would things look like for the Arsenal boss and his side in 2024?

One thing that could perhaps still look the same, surprisingly, is the playing squad.

The Gunners boss has opened up on his desire to snap up younger players who have scope to grow and develop.

All of the Spaniard's signings this summer are all aged 23 or under.

In Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White, the club have strengthened its spine with two young England internationals who should be mainstays at the Emirates for years to come – although they have had to fork out excessive sums for the pair.

Arteta has shelled out over £100m this summer, so it's not hard to imagine that bill racking up to an obscene amount by 2024 if the Spaniard remains in charge.

But what about a return on that investment?

The Gunners look a long way off challenging for honours either domestically or internationally.

The club have endured an agonising four years without tasting Champions League football.

But are the club likely to be back amongst Europe's elite by 2024?

Based on the Gunners' domestic decline over the past few years, you'd probably have to say no.

Fan unrest over a perceived lack of investment and a public ownership tussle between the Kroenke's and Spotify CEO Daniel Ek is hardly the sturdy foundation that Arteta would need to restore Arsenal to their former glory.

The Kroenke's have been adamant that the club are not for sale. But with the amount of money at stake for a takeover, it wouldn't be implausible for the music mogul to be the number one at the Emirates by 2024.

Whoever owns the club, what is for sure is that results will have to improve under the Spaniard if he is to still be in the dugout in three years' time.
