Arsenal are playing a waiting game on when Mat Ryan can play after Bernd Leno's red card.

The German goalkeeper was sent off for handling outside of his error in the second half of the game against Wolves on Tuesday night.

It was Arsenal's second red card of the game after David Luiz's error in the first-half resulted in his exit.

But when Leno saw red, he was replaced by Alex Runarsson, which worried many Gunners fans.

Runarsson has made a dodgy start to life with the Gunners – and Ryan was signed from Brighton in January to provide a better alternative.

But Ryan has been suffering from a hip problem, which explains his absence from the game at Wolves.

The Aussie stopper is facing a race against time now to be fit for the weekend.

It is currently believed to be 50/50 whether he will make it in time for the fixture at Aston Villa.

Coincidentally, Villa will have Emiliano Martinez, the goalkeeper they signed from Arsenal in the summer, in the other net.

The goalkeeping dilemma comes on the back of Leno's red card, in which he punched the ball clear with his arm outside of the area.

The incident was slammed as "comedy" by Rio Ferdinand on BT Sport following the game.

He said: “Leno, there are zero excuses for him.

“He’s misjudged the bounce of the ball then from there it’s just comedy.”

Glenn Hoddle added: “He was in two minds of some sort.

“What was going through his mind I don’t think anyone will know.

“He’s just got to play safe. He’s the last man, he always is as a goalie, so just play safe – head it out, knock it out with your chest, do something.

“He just got caught in two minds and it was disastrous for Arsenal, because they should’ve wrapped the game up, really, in the first half an hour."
