Arsenal’s Kai Havertz opened the scoring for Germany against Turkey after being deployed in a surprising new position.

The 24-year-old has struggled to make a major impact since joining Arsenal from Chelsea in a £65million move in June.

However, he impressed for Germany as he put his nation ahead against Turkey in a friendly in Berlin after just five minutes.

Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann made the rather unusual decision to deploy Havertz as a left wing-back and it worked out well.

Despite Havertz’s impact, however, Germany ended up losing 3-2.

Ferdi Kadioglu equalised for Turkey, with Kenan Yildiz then putting the visitors in front.

Niclas Fullkrug pulled Germany level but a penalty from Yusuf Sari saw Turkey prevail.

It will be intriguing to see whether Germany, who are hosting Euro 2024 next summer, will continue to deploy Havertz on the left side of the defence.

Havertz has mainly played in midfield for Arsenal, while he is also capable of operating up front or as a winger.

Since joining the Gunners he has scored just one goal in 19 appearances, with that goal coming from the penalty spot away to Bournemouth.
