Arsenal tell fans ‘how Champions League works’ and rivals can’t stop laughing

More than six years have passed since Arsenal last made an appearance in the Champions League – and it shows.

The north Londoners' absence from Europe's elite tournament has been so long that the club saw fit to publish information telling their fans 'how the competition works'. That's despite Arsene Wenger once famously guiding the Gunners into the group stages for 19 seasons on the trot.

That stellar run reached its end in 2017, but one would still think a club with such a rich history of participation could back its own fans to be clued up on the contest. Except it's not the first time Arsenal's social media team have felt the need to explain the Champions League ahead of their comeback.

In fact, the club published an almost identical post earlier this summer, and that too was savaged by opposition supporters for its innocence. Even Gunners fans themselves could hardly believe the Premier League giants felt it was necessary to provide such details.

And the attempt hasn't gone unnoticed this time around either, with socials media accounts mocking the breakdown en masse. The draw for this season's Champions League group stage will take place in Monaco on August 31, though many might have been lost without Arsenal's diagram.

"Nah Arsenal have been deep in the trenches for too long," wrote one Manchester United fan in a display of faux sympathy.

Another attached a clip of Gary Lineker, Micah Richards and Alan Shearer in hysterics, and the caption read: "Gotta enlighten their fans about UCL."

None of those in the current Arsenal squad were part of Wenger's setup in 2017 when the club was ousted from the round of 16 in nightmarish fashion. Bayern Munich battered the Gunners 10-2 over two legs (5-1 home and away), and the English outfit hasn't been back since.

Expectations are high, however, after Mikel Arteta's side pushed Manchester City close in the Premier League title race last term. That being said, social slip-ups such as these don't help improve the club's recovering image.

The Gunners have started the new season with back-to-back league wins over Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace. However, neither of those have perhaps been quite as comfortable as Arteta would have liked.

One could say the same for the club's online activity, with the Twitter account doing its best to make a positive situation that bit less comfortable.
