Arsenal intend to spend in the January transfer window following their excellent start to the season, reports claim. The Gunners are flying high at the top of the Premier League but are not set to rest on their laurels.

Even the most optimistic Arsenal supporters would have found it hard to predict where their side would sit eight games into the season. Saturday’s 3-1 win over north London rivals Tottenham ensured they remained at the summit for another week at least.

Summer signings Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko have both made big impacts since their arrival. Fabio Vieira, Marquinhos and Matt Turner have also all featured, while William Saliba is basically like a new signing having returned from his loan spell at Marseille last season.

However, Gunners chiefs are still planning on being busy in January. The Mail claims they are looking to sign a central midfielder.

Arteta on Arsenal extending their lead at the top of the table

Arsenal were keen on recruiting in that position late in the summer. Injuries to Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey sparked a late move for Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz.

Villa rejected three offers from Arsenal for Luiz on deadline day. The Brazilian is in the final year of his contract at Villa Park so could be available for a reduced price in January.

Partey is back fit but could not make it through Saturday’s derby win after suffering a minor knee injury while on international duty with Ghana. He has struggled with injuries throughout his time at Arsenal so far.

Meanwhile, Elneny is likely to be out until the start of 2023 with a serious hamstring problem. Albert Sambi Lokonga is likely to play a key role between now and January, especially in the Europa League.

Signing a winger has also been on Arteta’s radar since the summer. Arsenal allowed record signing Nicolas Pepe to leave the club on loan for the season but were unable to bring in a replacement.

Wolves star Pedro Neto was reportedly the Gunners’ top target in that position. However, the Portugal international was deemed too expensive.

Ukraine star Mykhaylo Mudryk is also linked with Arsenal. Mudryk has stated he would find it hard to turn the north Londoners down if they approached Shakhtar Donetsk.
