Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi looks set to sign for French side Marseille at the end of the season.

The 22-year-old is currently with the French club on a season-long loan deal, where is impressing, and although his Gunners contract isn’t due to expire until 2023 – he will join the club permanently this summer.

Marseille president Pablo Longoria confirmed on an RMC Sport show that the midfielder will pen a deal until 2025.

The Frenchman has played 38 times in all competitions this term and has now fulfilled all the relevant clauses – 26 of those being in Ligue 1 where he has chipped in with three goals and eight assists.

Guendouzi was signed by Arsenal as a 19-year-old in July 2018 for a fee believed to be in the region on £8million, instantly becoming a favourite under Unai Emery and emerging as prominent figure in his first season.

His time in north London hit a rocky road under Mikel Arteta, when he obtained a ‘bad boy’ reputation and has not started for the Gunners since a 2-1 defeat to Brighton in June 2020.

Following a post-match altercation with Neal Maupay he was excluded from the squad due to a ‘history of issues’ over his attitude and conduct.

He therefore spent last season loan at Hertha Berlin but struggled to convince, before then joining Marseille last summer, to reinvigorate his career.

Guendouzi has impressed in his native country and will now look to continue his good form as he joins permanently.

For Arsenal, the midfielder hasn’t featured for the best part of two seasons, therefore isn’t expected to be missed.

Although the Gunners will need to bring in reinforcements with Mikel Arteta’s squad looking very thin, especially if they qualify for the Champions League or Europa League next season.
