Arsenal sporting director Edu must ignore David Seaman’s advice on signing Cristiano Ronaldo. The former goalkeeper is wrong to claim the Portugal superstar would be a perfect signing for his old club.

Arsenal do not need a player like Ronaldo disrupting what Mikel Arteta is building at the Emirates. In fact, he is probably the last player the Gunners need right now.

Arteta has moved on several high-profile players with big egos in his three years in charge. The biggest ego of them all would only have a negative impact.

Ronaldo had his Manchester United contract terminated earlier this week and rightly so. Wherever he goes now, he will score goals. But there have also been hints this season that that part of his game is on the wane.

Seaman is arguably the greatest goalkeeper Arsenal have ever had. But his comments on TalkTV about the 37-year-old just don’t make sense.

Portugal fans suggest next club for Ronaldo after Man Utd exit

Seaman said: “Ronaldo is far from done and he would be perfect for Arsenal.” Arsenal could do with adding more goalscoring threat to their squad but not in the way Seaman suggests.

Gabriel Jesus is on a goalless run of 11 matches, while Eddie Nketiah is yet to notch in the Premier League this season.

But Edu cannot give in to any temptation there may be to even consider a move for Ronaldo. A free transfer, yes, but one that could cost Arsenal the title, not help them win it.

Arsenal are in the market for a winger and that is likely to be their main target for January. Mykhaylo Mudryk is their first choice, though he may prove too expensive.

Shakhtar Donetsk are wanting upwards of £87million (€100m) for the Ukraine star. That would be some signal of intent from Arsenal midway through a season.

Orlando City’s Facundo Torres is also on the Gunners’ radar and he would be a cheaper option. With Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka excelling so far this term, perhaps strengthening the squad rather than the starting XI is what Arteta needs to do.

That’s another reason why Ronaldo would not be the right signing. Where would he play? Despite his lack of goals, Jesus has transformed this Arsenal side.

Edu and Arteta have been smart when working together on the transfer market in recent seasons. Arsenal fans will be hoping that stays the same in January.
