Arsenal have reportedly made an approach for an alternative target to Ben White as their hunt for a new defender takes a twist. White had been thought to be the Gunners’ top target for the summer window, with personal terms agreed last week.

But they are still negotiating with Brighton over a price, with Mikel Arteta seeing two bids for the England international turned down.

Despite those setbacks, it appeared only a matter of time before White moved to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal were believed to be weighing up submitting a third bid of £48million, though that would still be below the Seagulls’ £50m valuation.

But it now appears that they are turning their attention to alternatives, with a deal White proving to be complicated.

While defence was one of the few highlights in a disappointing campaign, Arteta still sees that area as a weakness in his squad.

And with White harder to bring to London that it seemed, he is now looking to the other targets on his shopping list.

According to Foot Mercato, one of those targets is Paris Saint-Germain defender Thilo Kehrer.

The German has failed to hold down a regular starting place in the PSG senior squad, having signed from Schalke for £33.3m in 2018.

The 24-year-old made 19 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, his most outings in the league since moving to the Parc des Princes.

Kehrer could even see his chances for playing time further limited after Sergio Ramos moved to the French capital on a free transfer.

Ramos’ arrival could see Kehrer allowed to leave, with Foot Mercato stating PSG will consider offers they feel are fair.

That situation has interested Arsenal, who are said to have made an enquiry over the availability of the German.

He still has two years left on his contract with the Ligue 1 giants, meaning they are not under pressure to sell.

Though the Gunners have made their interest in Kehrer known, it is not yet clear what PSG’s response to their enquiry will be.

Arteta would certainly welcome the signing of Kehrer, who would be able to fill several gaps in his squad.

The German can play at right-back, centre-back and in defensive midfield, which are all areas of need for the Gunners.

Though his injury history may be a concern, Kehrer could provide important cover at the back if he is able to recreate the form that earnt him a move to France.
