Terrifying new dash-cam footage emerges of Lewis Hamilton’s head being run over

Terrifying new dash-cam footage of the collision between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton at Sunday's Italian Grand Prix has been released.

Hamilton, 36, was exiting the pit lane after his first stop when his title rival came down the main straight, and the pair were side by side heading down to the first corner.

Hamilton defended his position as Verstappen tried to pass and as they went through the corner, the two collided, lifting the Dutchman and his Red Bull car into the air and onto the Mercedes.

Mercifully the halo on Hamilton's car absorbed the crushing impact of Verstappen's 750-kilogram machine, with the seven-time world champion escaping with little more than a headache and a sore neck.

Verstappen, 23, was deemed by race stewards to be responsible for the incident and as a result, has received a three place grid penalty for the Russian Grand Prix on September 26.

Sure enough, the newly released clip shows just how close Hamilton came to a potentially life-threatening injury.

The 77-second video released by F1's Twitter account, has thus far been retweeted more than 3,600 times and received over 24,700 likes.

It ignited debate as to who was culpable for the incident, but a number of F1 fans expressed their relief that the incident didn't turn out a lot worse.

"The halo is the best thing to ever be introduced into this sport," wrote one.

"Man, it looks like Max's right rear wheel is certain to come down right into Lewis' cockpit, only for the halo to intercept it and lift it back up," said another.

"Wow, four years ago the headlines of this accident would’ve been of a very tragic nature if not for the invention of the halo safety system," added another.

It's not the first time Verstappen and Hamilton have clashed on the track this season, in what is turning out to be a heated battle for the Drivers' Championship.

At the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in July, Verstappen's race was ended by another incident between the pair, which left the Red Bull driver concussed and needing hospital treatment.

That day it was British driver Hamilton who was deemed to be at fault, but he recovered from a 10-second penalty to win his home race.

Verstappen heads to Russia with a slender five point lead over his rival.
