Serious questions will be asked of Mikel Arteta after his side failed to lay a glove on Villarreal with their season riding on last night’s second leg. The Gunners managed just one shot on target as they fell short against former boss Unai Emery, who made a mockery of his former club and those who made fun of his attempts to speak English.

Emery won the tactical battle against his successor to prove exactly why he has been so successful in this competition.

Arsenal’s Europa League exploits have eased the pressure on Arteta in recent months but now there may be no place to hide.

His side are currently ninth in the Premier League table and will have no European football to show for their season next term.

It could be argued that his side have now regressed since he took over, despite winning the FA Cup last year.

Reports suggest there are already two managers under consideration by the Arsenal hierarchy.

One is former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri, who managed Chelsea back in the 2018/19 season.

The Italian was underappreciated in west London where he guided the Blues to a top-four finish and Europa League glory.

He parted ways with Chelsea after just one season as he joined Juventus, where he won the Serie A title before being dismissed at the end of last season.

Sarri’s possession-based attacking style of football is likely to prove popular at the Emirates Stadium and his availability also solidifies his place as a standout option.

Furthermore, Paulo Fonseca has also reportedly been sounded out by the Arsenal board.

Those claims emerged around ten days ago when the Portuguese was still expected to continue.

However, since then Roma have confirmed that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Three hours later Jose Mourinho was unveiled as Roma’s new boss from next season, meaning Fonseca will be free to join a new club.

Crystal Palace are also believed to be interested in the former Porto, Braga and Shakhtar boss.

His English and tactical nous also makes him an attractive option for any Premier League club, particularly now no compensation fee will be involved.

Arteta’s future was believed to be secure moving forward several months ago but the Spaniard’s position is slowly becoming untenable.

Should Arsenal decide to pull the trigger at the end of the season, Sarri and Fonseca are said to be the two leading targets in the frame.
