Arsenal fans had their head in their hands when they witnessed their side concede to Sunderland in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals in the most hapless manner.

The Gunners had a two-goal margin – thanks to goals from Eddie Nketiah and Nicolas Pepe – but were shocked to see the Black Cats pull one back through a well-worked attack through the heart of their defence.

Nathan Broadhead finished off from the neat through ball he received from Elliot Embleton – but it was the dogged efforts of Alex Pritchard in the centre of the pitch that saw the northeast side manage to claw one back in the first half.

Arsenal went on to win the game 5-1 – but their fans were livid to see such a goal transpire, with most of the fume directed at right-back Cedric Soares.

The Portuguese had provided the assist for Pepe for the Gunners’ second goal, but his lack of guile in getting back to defend clearly set fans off.

Online, anger spilt out.

One said: “Cedric is shocking.”

Another said: “Cedric is a total calamity. Completely absent from that goal.”

One more stated: “Cedric is the main reason why Arsenal fans love Tomiyasu so much.”

An online user fumed: “Tomiyasu better be okay because Cedric is f******* garbage.”

One said: “how are elneny and cedric professional footballers pls, p*** poor..”

Another spat: “Sell Cedric, offers nothing. Bang average! Sorry but Ramsdale would of gotten bigger and saved that! Pepe, brother how's about help defend! Elneny my granny controls the mid with her stick better than you. Bang average!”

The defender made the move to north London in 2020 after spending five years with Premier League rivals Southampton. Cedric played 24 times for Arsenal last season but has only managed six outings so far this campaign for Mikel Arteta’s men.

A hat-trick from Eddie Nketiah along with a goal apiece from Pepe and debutant Charlie Patino saw the Gunners head to the semifinals of the competition.

Despite some teething problems, Arsenal have run into a good run of form recently, sitting in fourth spot in the table, 12 points off leaders Manchester City.

They have won their last three league games., while the likes of Emile Smith and even formerly sidelined Gabriel Martinelli have started to make their mark on the team. Patino, meanwhile, is another name to watch out for.
