Arsenal fans FUME as the Gunners are denied a spot-kick

‘Can someone please explain how that wasn’t a penalty?’ Arsenal fans FUME on social media as the Gunners are denied a spot-kick for Neal Maupay’s challenge on Gabriel during shock defeat to Everton

  • Everton beat leaders Arsenal in Sean Dyche’s first game in charge on Saturday
  • Gunners were denied a penalty after Neal Maupay made contact with Gabriel
  • Arsenal fans have been left by the referee’s decision to not award a penalty

Arsenal fans have taken to social media to share their frustration after the Gunners were denied a penalty during the defeat to Everton.

Mikel Arteta’s side suffered their second loss of the season after falling to a 1-0  defeat at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.

James Tarkowski’s header on the hour mark proved to be the difference in Sean Dyche’s first game in charge, denting Arsenal’s title hopes in the process.

The Gunners may feel hard done by after they were denied a penalty in the 65th minute when defender Gabriel went down from Neal Maupay’s challenge inside the box.

Despite the clear contact made by the Everton striker, the referee waved on play and a penalty was not given despite a VAR review.

Arsenal fans believe Neal Maupay should have been penalised for this challenge on Gabriel in their shock 1-0 defeat at Goodison Park

The Premier League leaders slumped to their first loss in just under five months on Merseyside

Arsenal fans have taken to social media to react, with many confused as to why their team was denied an opportunity to draw level.

One fan asked: ‘Can someone explain how that wasn’t a penalty btw? Literally Gabriel is in the box and Maupay brings him down but apparently Gabriel goes into Maupay?’

A second Arsenal fan wrote: ‘Please tell me how this is not a stonewall penalty? What’s more baffling is the @btsportfootball @PeterWaltonRef claimed the Arsenal player initiated contact. Where do you see any contact made by Gabriel?

‘Not sure how that’s not a penalty. Maupay uses the leg to block off Gabriel, not playing the ball,’ said another fan.

Everton picked up just their fourth win of the season thanks to James Tarkowski’s header

A fourth Arsenal fan mirrored similar views, saying: ‘Open to hearing opinions on this not being a penalty or not even being looked at for a foul on Gabriel. All I saw was Maupay stepping across his path and taking him out.’

Following the defeat to Everton, manager Arteta promised to surround his Arsenal players with love.

‘I want the team to know how much I love them. I love them much more now than three hours ago, a week ago, a month ago, three months ago,’ he said .

Mikel Arteta says that he loves his Arsenal team despite their disappointing defeat to Everton

‘It’s very easy to be next to the players when they’re winning and performing. These are the moments when I love my players and staff more and we’re going to stay together.

‘This journey is going to be difficult and challenging and there’s going to be big stones in the middle and we have to overcome that.

‘Now we have to prepare the week really well to get to Saturday with the right emotional spirit to beat Brentford.’

Arsenal will seek to return to winning ways when they host the Bees sat the Emirates next Saturday before facing Manchester City on February 15.
