Arsenal fans fumed on social media on Thursday night after they were not awarded a penalty for Harry Maguire’s tug on Takehiro Tomiyasu in their 3-2 loss at Manchester United.
The Gunners threw away a lead at Old Trafford to lose to their old rivals, with Cristiano Ronaldo netting twice in the second-half, including a 70th minute penalty after Martin Odegaard’s foul on Fred.

Referee Martin Atkinson did not decide to award the first-half penalty leaving Arsenal fuming
Nothing was given by referee Martin Atkinson, while VAR did not take a look at the challenge, leaving Gunners supporters fuming on social media.
One fan posted: ‘Can’t believe the VAR haven’t pulled up that foul by Maguire on Tomiyasu. Then again, it’s Old Trafford. I don’t know why I’m surprised anymore.’
Another said: ‘Why haven’t they checked Maguire dragging down Tomiyasu in the penalty box? Stonewall penalty.’
Meanwhile, another Arsenal fan claimed: ‘That’s a clear foul by Maguire on Tomiyasu in the penalty box… What’s the use of VAR?’
Gunners fans on social media could not believe the first-half penalty was not awarded
VAR came into effect in the second period when Odegaard took out Fred inside the box, but referee Atkinson did not award the penalty initially.
But the video referee at Stockley Park told the official to take another look at the incident on the pitchside monitor and the decision was reversed.
One Arsenal fan claimed: ‘Funny how VAR works now, but when Maguire was dragging Tomiyasu, there’s absolutely nothing.’

Arsenal took the lead at Old Trafford through Emile Smith Rowe’s early strike, but Bruno Fernandes equalised for United on the stroke of half-time.
Ronaldo swept United in front to temporarily complete the turnaround but their lead lasted just a couple of minutes when Martin Odegaard fired home from inside the box.
But Odegaard went from hero to zero as his foul on Fred allowed Ronaldo to scored from 12 yards, and Mikel Arteta’s Gunners had no further response.
