Arsenal duo Guendouzi and Saliba continue to make Arteta decision look foolish

Matteo Guendouzi and William Saliba are continuing to make Mikel Arteta’s decision to make them outcasts at Arsenal look foolish.

The duo are arguably the biggest targets of Arteta’s wrath over recent years, which came to a head this summer when both players were sent out on loan to Marseille.

Guendouzi had fallen foul of the Gunners boss during a defeat to Brighton in Project Restart, when he was involved in several controversial incidents.

The Frenchman joined Marseille in the summer transfer window, with the deal believed to include an option to buy at the end of the current campaign.

He has been joined at the Orange Velodrome by defender Saliba, who has failed to convince Arteta that he has the quality required for the Premier League.

Both outcasts were offered an escape route by Marseille and have gone on to become key members of Jorge Sampaoli’s team.

Saliba has played every minute of Les Phoceens’ five matches of the campaign so far, featuring on the right side of a back three.

Guendouzi has been similarly pivotal, starting every game in the early stages of the season, scoring one goal and notching one assist.

They continued to make Arteta look foolish on Thursday night in Marseille’s opening match of their Europa League campaign against Lokomotiv Moskow.

The Arsenal duo were again both named in Sampaoli’s starting line-up for the trip to the RZD Arena.

It was another impressive performance from the pair in the 1-1 draw, with Guendouzi helping the visitors to control midfield.

The 22-year-old drew plaudits from French newspaper La Provence for the tempo that he helped to impose on the match, as well as making runs and playing passes that put the hosts under pressure.

There was also a notable drop off in performance when Guendouzi was replaced by Pol Lirola after 83 minutes.

Saliba meanwhile, impressed with another faultless display at the back, making several key interventions to hold Lokomotiv to a single goal.

He also came close to scoring, but saw his header saved by Lokomotiv goalkeeper Guilherme, with the teams ultimately settling for a draw.

That leaves Marseille third in Group E, though Arteta’s decision to banish Guendouzi and Saliba to France continues to look foolish.
