Arsenal could sign Man City star Cancelo after £61m transfer decision

Arsenal’s purchase of two Manchester City players last summer has proven to be a huge success. Mikel Arteta could sniff another potential signing from his old club after it was claimed Bayern Munich will not trigger Joao Cancelo’s option-to-buy clause.

Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko have been immediate hits at the Emirates. The pair have transformed how Arsenal play, as well as contributing to a considerable shift in the mentality of the squad.

They are serial Premier League winners and could add another title to their collection this season. Pep Guardiola may be regretting selling the duo to Arsenal after underestimating the impact they could have at the Emirates.

Guardiola has never stood in the way of a player who wants to leave and it appears Cancelo does not have a future at the Etihad. After falling out of favour under Guardiola, the Portuguese left in a shock move to join Bayern on loan in January.

He hasn’t quite made the impact the German giants would have hoped for. Cancelo has started just four league matches since his move to the Allianz Arena.

Bayern negotiated an option to buy Cancelo for around £61m (€70m) in the summer. However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims they will not take up that option.

The only scenario where Bayern will sign Cancelo on a permanent deal is if they can persuade City to bring down the asking price. But that is where Arsenal could step in.

The Gunners are set to make a return to Champions League football for the first time since 2017. They will receive an influx of cash to boost their transfer budget.

Arteta will aim to strengthen in the summer, with Declan Rice a top target in midfield. But full-back is also an area that needs more depth.

Cancelo can play on both sides of defence and wouldn’t find it hard to settle into how Arteta plays, as he is used to a similar style at City. Arsenal may find it difficult to persuade City to sell them another player.

They may therefore have to pay over the odds and more than what Bayern would be prepared to offer. The potential sale of Kieran Tierney, who is linked with Newcastle, could open up a spot in Arteta’s squad as well as bring in substantial funds to help source a replacement.

Arteta was only coach at City for six months after Cancelo’s arrival in 2019. But the Spaniard has the tendency to have an instant impact on players and an explorative phone call to the 28-year-old could be something that interests him.
