Arsenal and Man Utd’s worst fears raised by Pep Guardiola’s Man City comments

Arteta previews Arsenal's Community Shield clash with Man City

Pep Guardiola has hinted he could stay at Man City after his contract expires in two years time, which will come as a blow to Premier League title rivals Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool. The Spaniard is gearing up for the Community Shield today against the Gunners, and will be hoping his side produce a statement performance before the new campaign kicks off.

Guardiola led City to an historic treble last season, winning the Premier League and FA Cup before claiming their first Champions League. The 2022-23 campaign also marked their fifth league triumph in just six seasons, with the Spaniard ushering in an utter period of dominance.

However, after winning all their is, there were slight fears that the City manager would consider walking away from the final two years of his deal at the Etihad Stadium – with his contract currently expiring in June 2025.

But he has allayed any fears on the eve of the curtain-raiser at Wembley, and even hinted he could stay on beyond 2025 in a teaser to City supporters.

Guardiola said: “I signed a contract for another two years because I feel comfortable – and nothing has changed whether we won (the treble) or didn’t win. I am happy and the people are happy, the board and the hierarchy especially, because they decide in the end which manager is going to lead this group of players.

“If they are satisfied, I am still satisfied. I want to defend what we won and maybe at the end of the season, if I am tired, we will talk with the club – or maybe extend more.”

Guardiola also admitted that the pressure will be slightly off his shoulders next season after beating Inter Milan 1-0 in the Champions League final in June.

He added: “Of course, it was a good summer because of the fact we did it. In the first game of the Champions League they will no longer ask me if we have to win it and this kind of stuff.

“When the competition starts we work a lot. Yesterday it was Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal. It’s the competition that puts you in this position.

“In the summertime you relax while other people work for the club to find what we need. But the moment the competition is here, the warnings are there and the players are there. It’s not a big effort.”
