Antonio Conte’s £250m transfer demands were deemed ‘unacceptable’ by Man Utd

Manchester United didn't appoint Antonio Conte to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer because he demanded a £250m transfer budget for 2022.

Conte was touted as a replacement for the underperforming Solskjaer last month, but United chiefs ultimately stuck by their former player.

Conte is said to have been interested in the role when approached, but as the Tottenham job became available, he was happy to pass up the United opportunity.

Now it's emerged that a key reason why he was still an option for Spurs and had not been snapped up was because what he wanted at Old Trafford was deemed 'unacceptable'.

As per The Mirror, the Italian manager wanted the bumper budget to use in the next two transfer windows, and United chiefs wouldn't give that to him.

Fellow managerial target Zinedine Zidane, who was sounded out by the Red Devils too, also had unsuitable demands.

The former Real Madrid boss wanted assurances he would have a certain level of control after having issues with such matters in his two spells in the Spanish capital.

Did United make the wrong decision? Let us know in the comments section.

Although United have a squad stacked with talent, Conte would have needed to find replacements for several outgoing stars.

Paul Pogba will be a significant loss to a midfield which is already in need of reinforcements.

A new defensive minded player will already have been on the agenda, but Pogba's departure will widen the void further.

Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata will likely be walking away from the club, while Edinson Cavani will be another big player gone.

Cavani's exit will leave just a then 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo as the only out-and-out striker in the squad.

Therefore, a new frontman will be needed to go with the defensive midfielder.

United spent roughly £125m in the summer window on Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho, and seem to be unprepared to double that amount of investment next year.
