Anthony Martial transfer papers show Man Utd could still have to pay big money
Anthony Martial could still end up costing Manchester United millions if a number of add-ons are met.
The Frenchman was signed from Monaco in 2015 at the age of 19 for a record-breaking amount for a teenager at the time, worth a reported £36m at the time.
It broke United's record that they paid for Luke Shaw 12 months previous when they forked out £27m to Southampton.
At the time, many questioned the deal – even including Louis van Gaal, who was manager of the Red Devils at the time.
But details have been revealed that show that United have further payments to make over the move.
In official papers released by Le Figaro, the full contract drafted up between United and Monaco has been leaked.
It shows that the fee was actually £38m (€50m) for the forward, made over the course of the season.
But they will have to stump up another €10m (£7.6m) if he scores 25 league goals, €10m if he wins 25 caps for France and €10m if he is nominated for the Ballon d'Or award. That could total upwards of £60m.
And they would have to stump up £7.6m if he scored 25 league goals, another £7.6m after winning 25 caps for France and another £7.6m if he is nominated for the Ballon d’Or.
That would take the potential fee to over £60m – but there is more.
The contract details that if United sell Martial for over £45m, Monaco are entitled to half of the profit made above that total.
For example, if United received £90m for the striker, the Red Devils would be obligated to pay Monaco £22.5m.
Martial has become a first-team regular under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since after a rollercoaster of a career under Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.
But his form still leaves questions unanswered with this season proving difficult for the France international.
