Andre Onana ‘risks being banned for Man Utd next month’ after costly blunders
Manchester United fans will be pushing Andre Onana out of the exit next month if he's called up for the African Cup of Nations.
The goalkeeper's commitments to Cameroon were until recently seen as a considerable issue for the Premier League club. Many feared United would suffer from losing their £47.2million signing for a month during the most hectic part of the campaign, but some may now view his absence as a blessing in disguise.
And after his latest major howler in Wednesday's Champions League draw at Galatasaray, it's reported Onana would consider rejecting an international call-up to focus on his club form. But that comes with complications of its own, which could see him suspended from club competition all the same.

Onana, 27, is facing a ban from United fixtures if he's summoned by his country but refuses to play at the 2023 AFCON, which is due to kick off on January 13. Some supporters are eager for a break from the former Ajax and Inter Milan stopper following a string of gaffes early on in his United career, but those prayers may go unanswered due to a ruling specific to cases like these.
FIFA regulations outline: “A player who has been called up by his association for one of its representative teams is, unless otherwise agreed by the relevant association, not entitled to play for the club with which he is registered during the period for which he has been released or should have been released pursuant to the provisions of this annex, plus an additional period of five days.”
Should Andre Onana be dropped as Man United's first-choice goalkeeper? Let us know in the comments section below.
After retiring from international duty in December 2022, Onana reversed his decision this past September and has since made three starts for the Indomitable Lions. He kept clean sheets in convincing wins over Mauritius and Burundi, with the latter being a key AFCON qualifier.
United also signed Turkey international Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce in the summer, and some supporters have been eager to see the 25-year-old get a chance in goal. Bayindir was signed for a fraction of the fee that brought Onana to Old Trafford – belief to be around £4m – but many are of the belief things can't get a lot worse.

Onana blundered a Hakim Ziyech free-kick in Istanbul as United twice let a two-goal lead slip and now sit on the brink of a group-stage exit in the Champions League. Similar oversights on the domestic front have contributed to United's current standing in sixth place, placing manager Erik ten Hag under immense pressure.
The only way Onana will be between the sticks for United next month is if Cameroon don't call up the 35-cap asset, though head coach Rigobert Song has shown he's a fan of the player. And given a refusal to travel would mean he's unable to turn out for his club anyway, a healthy fraction of the fanbase would be happy to see him become someone else's problem for now.
