Ander Herrera’s jibe at ex Man Utd teammate Marcos Rojo after post-match antics

Ander Herrera has poked fun at his former Manchester United teammate Marcos Rojo following his enraged reaction after a defeat for Boca Juniors in the Copa Libertadores.

The Argentine side were left outraged after a late goal was ruled out by VAR against Atletico Mineiro – leading to chaotic post-match scenes which saw Boca players try to storm the opposition’s dressing room.

The two matches at the quarter-final stage of the competition ended scoreless with Boca eventually eliminated on penalties, but the Argentine giants had two goals ruled out by VAR over the course of the tie.

That led to dramatic scenes in the tunnel following the match, where incensed Boca players appeared to try to enter their opponents dressing room – where the officials appeared to have taken refuge.

Boca players were visibly enraged with several throwing objects and one appearing to pick up a barrier in an attempt to throw it against the police, while Rojo picked up a nearby fire extinguisher in anger.

The police forces inside the tunnel reacted by appearing to use tear gas on the Argentine side, in an attempt to stop their advancement towards them.

There are now suggestions that those involved in the scenes could face further punishment by the Brazilian police force, but Herrera – now at Paris Saint-Germain – appeared to see the funny side.

The former United midfielder posted an image of the pair celebrating together during their time in Manchester, with a photoshopped fire extinguisher placed in Rojo’s hand alongside a crying laugh emoji.

Herrera – who left United as a free agent in 2019 – was typically seen as a combative player on the pitch but light-hearted and jovial away from it, and struck a close relationship with the defender, who shared his native language of Spanish.

Despite the midfielder poking fun at the incident, there could be serious repercussions for the players involved.

A member of the Brazilian police force, Santiago Mayor, told TyC Sports: "The match commissioner told us that there was aggression and that immediately activated our intervention.

"There are currently three players that have been identified as aggressors and are being charged with civil disturbance. We are currently still viewing surveillance video to see if there are any others involved."

Boca midfielder Diego Gonzalez told reporters after the game: "Without a doubt, everyone can see that.

"We scored a good goal, and the fact is that we deserved to win the first game as well.

"This hurts, we feel bad. CONMEBOL [the South American Football Confederation] need to look at the refereeing."

The Copa Libertadores is well known for its high drama and passion from both the players and the fans, with the most memorable incident coming in 2018 when the final between Boca and fierce Buenos Aires rivals River Plate had to be relocated to Madrid due to fan unrest.
