Ancelotti was baffled by Real Madrid speakers blasting ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’

Real Madrid's choice of post-match music baffled manager Carlo Ancelotti as the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu speakers bizarrely blasted out 'You'll Never Walk Alone' following their Champions League clash against Liverpool.

Trailing 5-2 on aggregate from the first leg, Jurgen Klopp's side were downed by a single Karim Benzema goal in the Spanish capital, the forward finding the net with the simplest of finishes once Vinicius Junior had cleverly squared whilst on the floor.

But at the end of proceedings, the European champions did not sound their historic 'Hala Madrid' anthem, instead opting to blast 'You'll Never Walk Alone' as a mark of respect from the PA system.

Boss Ancelotti explained the reasoning for the peculiar decision with Los Blancos thanking Liverpool for their tribute to honorary president, Amancio Amaro, at Anfield three weeks earlier.

"I didn’t know (why it was played), but it’s very good. Liverpool is a gentlemen’s club, and they helped us remember Amancio in the first leg," said Ancelotti. "It was a very nice gesture from them."

Amaro passed away at the age of 83 on February 21st, the same day the two sides faced off at Anfield. Liverpool commemorated the occasion by laying down flowers in front of the travelling Madrid supporters whilst also dedicating 'You'll Never Walk Alone' to the family of Amaro.

Those close to the Real Madrid legend expressed their gratitude at the moving tribute with a heartfelt statement, which reads: "Many thanks to all the institutions, mayors, political representatives, club presidents, from Spain and from abroad, who have offered their condolences sincerely and with special affection.

"We thank all of them and, especially, Liverpool, for honouring their slogan 'You'll never walk alone…'"

Speaking after the full-time whistle, Klopp was also quick to voice his gratitude for the warm atmosphere between the two European giants. He said: "People told me, my staff told me after the game. It is a really nice gesture. We are two heavyweights who meet each other quite frequently in international football.

"I think it is clear we respect each other a lot and whoever did it, whoever was doing something like that, [made] a really nice gesture, I have to say."
