Ambitious Aloisi confident of success

John Aloisi’s belief that he would get another A-League coaching opportunity never wavered.

Without a coaching job since his frosty split with Brisbane Roar in December 2018, the Socceroos great will return to the A-League next season after being appointed as Mark Rudan’s successor at Western United.

It’s a return to Victoria for Aloisi, whose first top-flight coaching gig was with Melbourne Heart from May 2012 to December 2013.

Sacked from that job, Aloisi was given an opportunity by the Roar in 2015, and twice during his Brisbane tenure had his team just one win away from a grand final appearance.

But when his time ended with the Roar after the club’s poor start to the 2018-19 season, Aloisi was doubted by many.

And as time went on and jobs went to others, there were suggestions that he may not be given another A-League chance.

However, Aloisi remained confident his time would come again, and he intends to repay the faith shown in him by United, a club who after playing finals football in its first year, missed the top six last season following a shocking run of losses.

“I was just hopeful it would be the right opportunity and this definitely is the right one,” he said.

“It’s great that I can join a club that’s as ambitious as me, and I’m privileged to be part of something that they’re trying to build still.

“They’re only been around two years. Mark Rudan and the football built a good foundation and we want to improve on that an grow as a club.

“They’re very ambitious, they want to win, they want success and that’s what I want. The opportunity to do that, especially out in the west of Melbourne, is something that is massive for the club and the growth of the game.”

Aloisi, 45, said he was a better coach now than what he was when his Roar stint ended.

“You’re always learning and you always learn from your experiences,” he said.

“Now reflecting on my time at the Roar, I know what I can do better, what I can improve on, and also having the chance to watch more football, studying more of the game, being able to travel to visit different clubs, I have definitely improved.

“You get better with time and experience. I believe I can re-energise a club, I believe I can get results that are needed and I also believe I can achieve sustained success as well.

“It’s not only about today, it’s about tomorrow and the future.”
