Amadou Onana blasts VAR on Instagram after Virgil van Dijk ‘red card’ incident

Everton's new hero Amadou Onana has hit out at VAR after Virgil van Dijk escaped a red card for a challenge in the Merseyside Derby.

Onana was on the end of a high challenge from the Dutchman that saw him writhing on the ground in pain. However, Van Dijk escaped the incident with just a yellow card, but Onana thought he should have received a tougher punishment.

The Belgian posted on his Instagram story: "Imma leave this here… VAR," with an image of the challenge. The image shows Van Dijk making contact with the shin of Onana.

One fan said: "Other way round we are down to 10 men. Any other game this weekend it's red. VAR must have been taking a p*** on this one."

"I didn’t think it was a red at first, but the more you see it, it’s a leg breaker all day. The fact VAR didn’t look at it makes it a lot worse too," a second added. While a third replied: "If Van Dijk makes contact with the shin pad there it’s a red card. VAR not checking that is worrying."

Frank Lampard also thought Van Dijk should have been given his marching orders: "I was surprised the ref wasn't asked to look at it. For me, it was a red card.

"It doesn’t matter now, but for me, it was a red and that changes the face of the last 20 minutes.

"There was some talk before this game about bad tackles and the referee just has a job to do, and so does VAR. I think they got that one wrong in my opinion.”
