Rangers legend Ally McCoist claims the better team “by some considerable distance” won Wednesday night’s Old Firm derby. Celtic beat Rangers 3-0 to leapfrog their rivals and move top of the SPFL table. Two goals from Reo Hatate and one from Liel Abada sealed a memorable victory for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

It was Postecoglou’s first win over Rangers since being appointed Celtic boss last summer.

Japanese star Hatate joined Celtic ahead of the January transfer window and has had an immediate impact on the squad.

The 24-year-old put in a man of the match performance at Celtic Park.

But McCoist also was full of praise for right-back Josip Juranovic and winger Jota in his assessment of the game.

The former Rangers striker and manager was damning in his assessment of how the match panned out for his old side.

“I thought Celtic were excellent first half, by the way,” McCoist told talkSPORT.

“I did expect it, to come out of the traps and have a go.

“I just thought Rangers could not handle or match the intensity they came out to the game with.

“I know the wee lad Hatate scored a couple of goals and he played well, he did, he played well.

“However I thought Juranovic was outstanding, I thought Jota was…

“No mistake about it, the better team won and by some considerable distance.”

Former Scotland forward Alan Brazil agreed Jota had a fine night.

Brazil replied: “He’s a player Jota, we said that weeks and weeks ago.”

After the match, Postecoglou could not hide his delight and claimed it was one of his best moments in football.

The Australian told Celtic media: “I’m super proud of the players. Everyone knew it was a big game and the massive consequences of it, and we knew what it meant to our supporters.

“I thought our first-half football was outstanding. It was really quality play, great goals and we could have had some more – their keeper pulled off some great saves.

“In the second half we had to defend more but, again, we’ve shown we can do that so I’m really proud.

“I’ve been pretty fortunate. I’ve had some special moments in football but that one’s up there tonight.

“From the moment we walked out until 10 minutes after the game, they didn’t stop. That’s the most pleasing thing – that the players put in a performance worthy of our support and I think everyone goes home happy tonight.”
