Ally McCoist doesn’t think Rangers’ teenage defender Leon King is ready to move to the Premier League. King has been linked with the likes of Manchester United, Newcastle and Leeds after breaking into the Rangers first team. But he struggled in the Champions League on Wednesday night after coming on as a half time substitute during his side’s 7-1 thumping at the hands of Liverpool.

“He’s got a chance, he’s definitely got a chance.” McCoist told talkSPORT. “There’s already talk of one or two clubs in England who are looking at him. I’m not sure he’s ready for that yet, to be honest with you. But he’s definitely got a chance.”

Rangers were drawing 1-1 with the Reds at Ibrox when King was introduced to the action after Roberto Firmino had cancelled out Scott Arfield’s opener. But the 18-year-old was run ragged by the Liverpool frontline as Firmino nudged his side ahead 10 minutes into the second period.

Darwin Nunez added a third for the visitors, before Mohamed Salah came off the bench to bag a six-minute hat-trick. And Harvey Elliott scored the final goal three minutes before the end.

King played the full 90 minutes when Rangers travelled to Anfield to take on Jurgen Klopp’s side earlier this month as Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners. And after that match he admitted he was surprised to be thrown into the team. “It was amazing,” the centre-back said. “I was a wee bit taken back to be fair but when we get back to Glasgow and chill out a little bit I’ll look back on it and still be buzzing.”

King, who won born in Glasgow, progressed through the Rangers academy and signed his first professional contract in 2020 at the age of 16. He penned fresh terms in the summer to commit his future to the club until 2024. And ahead of Wednesday’s heavy defeat, Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst dismissed the speculation linking the ace with a move to England.

“You will see him tomorrow,” the ex-Netherlands international explained. “I’ve not heard of any interest from down south. When you are performing well in Scotland you will get interest. Leon is a player who is developing really well.

“He played some games last year but we wanted to make space for him to get more minutes and when he is taking the minutes he is performing really well. He still has a lot to learn but he is open to coaching and putting the energy into work hard and better himself. I think his future is very bright but he needs to continue playing well and training well and we are helping him in that process. He is developing really well.”
