Alli’s message to Bale as out of favour pair make statement to Mourinho

Dele Alli made sure to publicly congratulate Gareth Bale on a night where the two outcasts sent a pointed message to Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho.

The pair have been on the peripheries for Spurs in recent weeks, with Mourinho's position coming under intense scrutiny – thanks to a run of five defeats in the last six league games.

But once again, the Europa League has provided welcome relief for the Portuguese, as he watched his side thump Wolfsberger AC 4-0 in the round of 32.

Alli started the scoring as he continues his Spurs renaissance, which is leading to an increased clamour for Mourinho to finally include him in the Premier League.

The England international has played just 113 minutes in the league, with his last start coming on the opening day of the season. But his acrobatic, overhead kick made it clear he still has the kind of quality to influence games at the highest level.

Bale meanwhile, continued to show that he is beginning to rediscover his best form, scoring the third, either side of a Carlos Vinicius brace.

The Welshman has endured a difficult time back with his beloved Spurs and Mourinho has been reluctant to play him on a regular basis.

But after impressive showings in the first leg of this tie, followed by a bright cameo in the defeat to West Ham, he is starting to chalk up a string of improved performances.

Following their goalscoring exploits, Alli was quick to take to social media, posting: "Congrats on another goal @GarethBale11! A good night under the lights".

With Bale starting from the bench, there is a chance that he could be in line to start against Burnley this weekend, with Mourinho also claiming Alli's performances are giving him selection headaches.

He said: "These are the headaches that I love. The headaches that you don't like are the headaches of selection. Lots of people not performing. Lots of doubts, by negative reasons.

"These are the wonderful problems. But playing Sunday, and playing Wednesday at Fulham, and Sunday against Palace, and playing Thursday in Europa League again, that's what I need.

"The players they need to understand this concept of team, and the intensity of matches. and if you have everybody ready or play at this level, it's the best thing to happen to the team."
