Alex Ferguson rang Gary Neville about ‘f***ing unfair’ criticism of David De Gea

Gary Neville has revealed Sir Alex Ferguson once called him over his 'f***ing unfair' criticism of David De Gea while working as a pundit on Sky Sports.

De Gea has come under criticism in recent weeks – especially for his performance against Brentford. However, in his heyday, De Gea was one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League.

And that was all the more impressive after the Spaniard had struggled to adapt to England's top flight in his first season on these shores. However, Sir Alex took exception to Neville after he criticised his performances once De Gea started to perform.

Speaking on The Overlap, Neville said: "Sir Alex rang me once on my comments on David De Gea. Once.

"It was in his second season of my punditry, so he let the first season go. Do you remember, his first season was a massive struggle, wasn't it? But in the second season, he started to improve, to the point he became one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

"Sir Alex rang me and said 'I got it last year, but I think you're being f***ing unfair'." Neville went on to say he didn't back down under the pressure of his old boss.

Neville went on to back up his point – saying pundits have to give their opinion and not sit on the fence on air.

De Gea has struggled this season under Erik ten Hag, despite Manchester United registering their first points of the season against Liverpool on Monday evening.
