Ajax stop when 9-0 up to give guard of honour for rival’s return after cancer

Ajax players gave Excelsior youngster Devin Plank a guard of honour when he entered the action on Thursday evening as he returned from receiving cancer treatment.

Plank, 20, had been diagnosed with cancer after going to hospital with pains in his leg.

However, the youngster was given the devastating news he had developed a cancerous tumour in his fibula.

And after not making an appearance for the Rotterdam based since October 2020, Plank was introduced in the 89th minute during their Dutch Cup clash.

Ajax, who were 9-0 up, gave Plank a guard of honour as he made his return to professional football.

Plank entered the pitch in the 89th minute as both sides clapped him on.

The 20-year-old then embraced his teammates as he made his long-awaited return to action.

Plank was only able to enter the fray late on after doctors had instructed him to play no more than two minutes for Excelsior so his ongoing recovery was not impacted.

The Dutchman had been undergoing chemotherapy to treat the tumour.

"It was an unforgettable moment We had already made four changes and I thought I was not going to come on.

"I hope to have many minutes again as soon as possible."
