Ajax boss says new Man Utd signing Antony isn’t worth the ‘crazy’ money

Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder has admitted Antony is not worth the huge transfer fee Manchester United are paying for the star.

The Red Devils confirmed they reached agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Antony and are believed to be paying around £85million for the player. The completion of the transfer is subject to a medical.

Antony will team up with former boss Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford with Schreuder having replaced Ten Hag in Amsterdam. Though the new Ajax boss does not believe 22-year-old Antony is worth such a fee.

Schreuder told Ziggo Sport: "Today, the amounts are crazy. Barcelona paid €115m (£99m) for [Ousmane] Dembele, Manchester United also paid more than €100m (£84m) for [Jadon] Sancho.

"Then you can pay that for him [Antony] too. Are the players worth it? No. But it will be paid."

Schreuder also criticised Antony's behaviour in pushing for a transfer with the Brazilian reportedly going AWOL from the Eredivisie giants.

Schreuder explained: "Absolutely [he could be fined]. I don't think it's good that it's possible within our club. If you're Ajax, it's just bad that this happens.

"I've talked about it with Antony. If you're disappointed for a day or two, I understand, but at some point you're a professional.

"Then I said: 'I will continue with the guys who are there'. At a certain point you get angry about it, 'like… what are we doing?'

"Then I think: 'you're just a f***ing player'. You just have to do your thing. I talk to him about it and hear his side of the story. You try to brush it off as a manager and move on with the guys you do have. But my personal feeling is that it's just bad."
