Aguero says he turned down Messi’s No.10 shirt after joining Barcelona

Sergio Aguero has admitted he turned down the chance to don Lionel Messi's No. 10 shirt when he joined Barcelona in the summer.

It comes after the six-time Ballon d'Or left the Nou Camp in an astonishing move to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

Despite agreeing a new contract with Barca, La Liga rules stated that he could not be registered as a player and had to leave.

For Aguero, it was a real kick in the teeth after moving to the club in order to play with his compatriot at club level.

But the former Manchester City star has admitted he could not take up Messi's No. 10 shirt despite donning the kit at the Etihad.

He said: “Refusing to wear the number 10 shirt at Barcelona? It wasn't that I didn't want to, but it was out of respect for Messi."

Instead, the famous shirt went to young prodigy Ansu Fati whereas Aguero will wear No. 19.

Messi is not the only Barcelona legend to wear the No. 10 with Ronaldinho and Rivaldo also previously donning the kit.

So there are some big boots to fill for the 18-year-old – who has already missed an entire season through injury and has yet to recover.

As for Aguero, the Argentina international is also out through injury and has yet to make his debut.

And the 33-year-old has already admitted to his pet peeves in Barcelona – the road system.

He said: “I go by the main road [in the centre], and the GPS tells me to turn right, but when I arrive and I have to turn right, I have to pull to the right, right?

“Well, they honk the horn. But I'm going to turn right!”

He went on to state how one taxi driver slammed the striker for his driving around the city.

The striker added: “A taxi driver scolded me and I told him: ‘But brother, if I'm going to turn right, I have to turn to the right side.’ And he tells me: ‘No, your lane is here.’

“And I say, ‘But if I have to turn, when I turn, if you come, you will hit me.’

“I swear to you, either I am bad or the streets here are bad. For me they are wrong.”
