£70m release clause can save Arsenal’s transfer window after Dusan Vlahovic blow
Arsenal’s anticlimactic January window may still be saved by transfer target Alexander Isak’s reported release clause of £70million.
Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu Gaspar had put Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic top of their January wish-list, even offering the Italian club in excess of £60million for the Serb.
It has now emerged that Vlahovic, 21, has snubbed Arsenal in order to join Serie A giants Juventus, with the Bianconeri reportedly set to submit an official bid.
Yet the Gunners may still have a chance at recovering a poor transfer window courtesy of their back-up option Isak’s staggering £70million release clause, reported by the Daily Express.
Daily Star Sport understands the Real Sociedad forward had been shortlisted by Arteta as an alternative to Vlahovic and the north Londoners could now turn their attention to signing him before the January deadline.
Edu has a history of triggering release clauses, having waited until deadline day to sign £45million Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid back in 2020.
Isak, 22, who has shown interest in joining the Premier League in the past, is also understood to be keen on the move, previously claiming it “would be nice to play in England” one day.
Still, his hefty £75million price-tag may deter Arsenal from a move that would shatter their previous transfer record of £72million for Nicolas Pepe.

Isak's tally of just four goals this campaign also leaves a lot to be desired in terms of their ambitions for the season.
Arsenal could therefore launch a bid instead for Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, should they deem Isak’s release clause too costly.
The Gunners have a clear striker problem which remains unresolved as they push to secure their first top-four finish since the 2015/16 season.
Former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future at the club looks to be in doubt while Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are not expected to stay at the end of their respective contracts this summer.
