7 transfer announcement fails – from grumpy players to toasting the kit supplier

In the modern day, the signing announcement has become one of the key parts of clubs' transfer business… but they do not always go as planned.

This can range from the player looking less than impressed to be joining the club, poor fashion choices or an inability to wow fans with their skills at an unveiling.

The latest player to fall into the failure category is Newcastle United's Kieran Trippier, who was pictured pointing at his sleeve instead of the club's badge after being unveiled on Friday.

So, following that blunder, here are seven more of the biggest transfer announcement fails.

Aaron Lennon to Everton

Former England winger Aaron Lennon appeared underwhelmed after signing for Everton on loan from Tottenham Hotspur on deadline day in 2015.

The winger exhibited a grumpy expression in a number of pictures as the Toffees announced his arrival, including when holding the shirt and posing in the bootroom.

However, Lennon saw the funny side and recreated the photos with a happier expression when his move was made permanent in the summer.

Kolo Toure to Celtic

The usually bubbly Kolo Toure looked equally stern faced when he signed for Scottish giants Celtic in the summer of 2016.

He donned a blank look of reflection as he stood at the end of the tunnel at Celtic Park in full kit before later perking up to juggle the ball in front of photographers.

It was the second time he had been signed by Brendan Rodgers and he is now a member of the Northern Irishman's backroom staff at Leicester City.

Maxwel Corent to Burnley

In a similar way to Trippier, Maxwel Cornet's pointing seemed off as he posed in a Burnley shirt for the first time after arriving in the summer.

The Clarets parted with a club record £13.5million fee to sign the Ivorian from Lyon and he looked overjoyed to move to the Premier League.

However, in his attempts to point to the badge of his new club he instead paid tribute to the logo of kit manufacturers Umbro.

Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United

When Manchester United signed Cristiano Ronaldo from Sporting Lisbon in 2003, the Portuguese teenager was a relative unknown to most fans.

Ronaldo soon caught the eye after arriving in England, though, as he sported a bold and bright jumper on his first day at United.

His look did not catch on, with rolled up sleeves and blonde highlights in his hair, but Ronaldo has gone on to become one of the world's most fashionable footballers.

Jose Antonio Reyes to Arsenal

Another fashion failure followed just months after Ronaldo's arrival when Arsenal unveiled the signing of Spanish winger Jose Antonio Reyes from Sevilla.

Reyes posed alongside manager Arsene Wenger outside the Gunner's training ground holding his new number nine Arsenal shirt.

However, it was what Reyes was wearing that caught the eye as he posed in an oversized pair of flared denim jeans that almost entirely covered his shoes.

Robinho to Manchester City

When Manchester City were taken over in 2008 to become one of the world's richest clubs they quickly moved to make a statement signing before the end of the transfer window.

They successfully beat off interest from Chelsea to land the signing of winger Robinho on deadline day, although the winger reportedly thought he was joining another club.

At his unveiling, Robinho expressed his delight at joining Chelsea before quickly being corrected by a journalist and apologising for his slip of the tongue.

Multiple La Liga signings

In Spain, it is common for new arrivals to be unveiled in front of the press at a club's stadium and they are often asked to juggle the ball and show off their skills in front of the gathered crowd of fans and reporters.

It is perhaps surprising, though, how many of these professional footballers are unable to successfully keep the ball in the air when the spotlight is on them.

Recent shockers include Barcelona's Martin Braithwaite and Ousmane Dembele, although Theo Hernandez's attempt keepy uppies resulting in him booting the ball several metres into the air takes the cakes.
