6 huge pay offs for managers as Steve Bruce pockets £8m after Newcastle exit
Managerial dismissals have become the norm in modern football, with clubs often sacking their managers before the end of their contracts due to poor form.
Due to having their contracts ripped up ahead of schedule, managers will often receive huge pay outs after being sacked by their clubs.
This is again the case with Steve Bruce, who has reportedly received a pay off worth £8million after being sacked by Newcastle United on Wednesday morning.
Bruce had been under pressure at St. James' Park with the club winless and second bottom of the Premier League after the first eight matches of the season.
Following Bruce's pay out, here are six more huge manager pay offs.
Antonio Conte – £26.6million
Although the exact figure received by Antonio Conte is unknown, Chelsea's financial reports for his final year in charge show that the club spent £26.6million on relieving him and his staff of their duties.
Conte had guided the Blues to their fifth Premier League title in his first season in charge, but a disappointing fifth place finish the following season saw the Italian sacked at the end of the 2017/18 season.
This was despite the club winning the FA Cup in May and Conte was understood to have been angered by his dismissal.
The pay off he received likely went a long way towards helping him get over his dismissal, though.
Jose Mourinho – £9.5million and £18million
Having twice been sacked by Chelsea and then again as manager of Manchester United, Jose Mourinho has received his fair share of financial settlements.
It is his two Chelsea pay offs that earn him a spot on this list, with the first in 2007 seeing him pocket £18milion when he left Stamford Bridge after a poor start to the season.
Eight years later, Mourinho was again given his marching orders by Roman Abramovich as the Blues made a shocking title defence in 2015/16.
With the club in 16th position in the table in December, Mourinho was sacked and received £9.5million in the process.
Mauricio Pochettino – £12.5million
Less than six months after guiding Tottenham Hotspur to their first Champions League final, Mauricio Pochettino was sacked by the club in November 2019.
Spurs sat in 14th position in the Premier League after 12 matches and with just three league wins to their name as Pochettino was dismissed and paid that sum of £12.5million.
Pochettino's work in transforming Spurs into Champions League regulars was recognised in his pay off but also showed the club were happy to spend in order to make a change.
Fabio Capello – £13.4million
When Fabio Capello was appointed as the manager of the Russian national team in 2012, he became one of world football's highest paid gaffers.
However, he was let go just three years later after a group stage exit at the 2014 World Cup and an underwhelming start to Euro 2016 qualifying.
In the process, though, the veteran Italian manager received a large pay out worth a reported £13.4million.
Laurent Blanc – £17million
Despite winning the domestic treble in two of his three seasons as Paris Saint-Germain manager as well as the league and Coupe de Ligue in the other, Laurent Blanc was let go by the club in 2016.
A failure to get beyond the Champions League quarter-finals contributed to this and Blanc was paid a tidy £17million as he was sacked and replaced by Unai Emery.
Emery then failed to take PSG past the round of 16 in Europe and also finished second in the league to Monaco.
Luiz Felipe Scolari – £13.6million
Chelsea appointed World Cup winner Luiz Felipe Scolari in the summer of 2008 off the back of the club finishing second in the league and reaching the Champions League final under interim boss Avram Grant.
Come February 2009, however, Chelsea sat in fourth place in the Premier League, behind Aston Villa and 10 points of league leaders Manchester United.
As a result, the Brazilian was dismissed just seven months into his tenure and was paid £13.6million as a result.
